Course Syllabus
In this course, we examine the historical and contemporary importance of nature, as concept and physical reality, to the economies, cultures and politics of the American West.
In taking this course, you should learn to:
- Interpret "nature" and its role in the historical geography of the American West;
- Assess the institutions implicated in efforts to manage nature in the West;
- Discuss current philosophical and political debates about those efforts.
This course fulfills requirements in the Sustainability major and minor and also in General Education (Integrating Knowledge: Science, Technology and Society). As part of the General Education program, this course promotes learning for Social Awareness and Responsibility and Multidisciplinary Learning. This course may also fulfill requirements in interdisciplinary programs like Social Science and Interdisciplinary Studies.
